The true meaning of Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is the process through which the therapist and the client collaborate, within a predefined space, time and duration of sessions, in order to fulfill the client’s request. The relationship is governed by a code of ethics that ensures both parties, especially the client. This is the procedural aspect of psychotherapy.

The essential aspect, the true heart of psychotherapy as very tenderly described by Yalom is an affectionate, deeply human encounter between two persons.

What is the goal of psychotherapy?

The basic aim of psychotherapy is changing the way a person feels, thinks, behaves and interacts so that initially he comes to terms with himself as he is. This acceptance is the first step towards integration and the emergence of the Authentic Self.

What motivates us to change?

The driving force that pushes man to change is the desire to know himself and others, and the will to act in order to implement the above.

Why should I start Psychotherapy?

The main reasons someone chooses to commence psychotherapy arise from the desire/need:

  1. To effectively manage crises and major changes in his life (eg, divorce, bereavement, job loss, illness etc)
  2. To alter the dysfunctional patterns (thinking, behavior and emotions) that inhibit emotional maturation and the achievement of his goals.
  3. To alleviate him from cataclysmic negative emotions and symptoms (eg, phobias, panic attacks), which takes away his right to live effectively.
  4. To satisfy the basic impulse for growth and health (OKness), with is innate in each person.
  5. To explore all the aspects of his existence and understand the connection between them.
  6. To evolve authenticity and the degree of his awareness in order to create more effective and harmonious relationships.
  7. To reconnect with his True Self, to seek self-realisation and reach his full potential and talents.

Any supportive psychotherapeutic approach responds to different stages of psychological maturation. The therapist is required to discern where the client is at in order to facilitate the psychological process.

Regardless of the trigger to start psychotherapy, it leads people to reassess their meaning of life and personal abilities.
